NHS Graduate, Freya Parker, reflects on her placement with Attain

Back to 30 days

Attain are proud to offer NHS Graduates a work placement for eight weeks, to understand how we work with the NHS to improve health and wellbeing.

We asked Freya Parker about her experience with Attain team and here she reveals what her favourite aspects were and what she’s learned.

What did you want to get out of your experience with Attain?

My two main objectives when looking for a placement were to gain an understanding of what a healthcare delivery organisation like Attain does and how they work with NHS partners and to experience how projects are delivered with tangible results. My experience with Attain surpassed my expectations and it was a wholly enjoyable time.

What were the highlights of your placement?

It was great to be given the opportunity to shadow all the teams involved in the business as it’s given me a broader view of what consultancies do as well as exposure to different aspects of delivery and transformation. In my previous placement, I worked as an operational manager for a small number of services, at Medway NHS Foundation Trust, so at Attain, it was useful to shadow other projects such as NHS digital to see the how it fits with wider areas and how it compares nationwide. Working closely with the Commercial team at Attain also exposed me to CCG’s which will help with my next placement, as it gave insight to how a CCG works and what to expect.

What was your favourite aspect?

I really enjoyed shadowing, in particular on a 111 online project and projects in Norfolk. These had links to my previous experience, which enabled me to develop a greater understanding. I also really enjoyed completing a Brexit and procurement specific project which was linked to what I did in the previous placement, so I had a good understanding of the area.

What have your learnt from your experience?

At Attain, the culture is to get it right and to hold onto a high standard to deliver the work well. It reinforced and reminded me to hold myself to that in the future. Everyone was so supportive and took a genuine interest in helping me in any way I needed. I had regular check ins to give me feedback and guidance, so I found it a very supportive environment as I could lean on everyone’s experience.

Would you recommend Attain’s NHS Graduate scheme?

I would highly recommend experience at Attain. I have already told a friend to do it! I was given wide exposure across the business and through the shadowing particularly, I have been able to really develop my knowledge of the work of healthcare delivery organisations and my perspective on NHS services.
